Light

Sometimes light sources just aren't in a useful place. Our central ceiling light has been redundant for years now. With low level and wall lighting it is just not needed and the chandelier was purely aesthetic. It was one of the first things we purchased when we bought our flat 6 years ago and as our style has evolved it hasn't really fitted in. So it came down at the weekend and was packed away. It's amazing how much larger the room feels and the all ready high ceilings seem much further away. We have also had a lighting issue in the 'dining' area and unless we have all the lamps on full (which kills the atmosphere) we can't really see what we are eating! So we bought 5 metres of lighting flex and a vintage bulb holder and ceiling hook from Historic Lighting (I love their business cards) and draped the cord along the ceiling, attached it to the ceiling hook which enabled us to drop the light source down on the table. Add a 40 Watt filament bulb and a dimmer switch and you have lovely romantic lighting (and most importantly we can see our food). It also helps bring this area together by using the light to separate it visually from the living room.

  1. That is a great idea - my parents did the same in their dining area as you need to see the food but not always be in bright glare - I think your take is more modern and one I will bear in mind for the future.
