Birthday fun
We took the day off for my birthday and had a leisurely drive to the South coast to visit a couple of buildings that had been on my must do list for some time. First stop was the Jerwood situated on the working fishing beach of old Hastings. The collection wasn't our thing at all but we really went to see the building so it didn't matter. From inside the large frameless windows capture the realism of the building's surroundings turning the views into the best artwork hanging in the gallery.
A few miles down the road is the amazing De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill on Sea. The building blew me away. It was designed by Erich Mandelsohn and his short lived partner Serge Chermayeff between 1934-35. The welded steel frame holds the concrete form which is finished in bright white. The sea elevation is long and geometric only interrupted by the glass stair tower that protrudes out to the sea view in a gentle curve.
